Dedicated Servers
If an on-line presence is extremely critical or essential to your business or personal success, you need a first-tier hosting service that offers the best in hardware, network access, data protection, data recovery and support.

JohnCompanies specializes in a complete hosting service designed to give you the reliability and availability that are fundamental to a successful enterprise,

Standard Dedicated Servers

Presented below are our standard and most popular server plans that span a range of performance from a single-processor single-HDD server to an enterprise level machine with dual quad-core Xeon processors and 15K RPM SCSI hard drives.

You can customize or upgrade any of our standard servers, e.g., RAM, hard drives, RAID configuration or redundant power supplies.

All dedicated servers are fully tested for 24-hours before they are installed. Your server will be put together as soon as we receive your order and payment and typically will be online in about 3 to 5 business days.

To order a standard server or receive a quote on a custom server configuration, please follow the links below.

    Hardware
To ensure maximum up-time, start with reliable hardware. Our servers are built with the highest quality Intel motherboards and processors, Kingston memory, 3WARE or LSI RAID controllers and fully warranted Seagate or Western Digital hard drives.

    Network
Each rack in the datacenter has redundant connections to our main routers which route traffic to multiple tier 1 backbone providers - Sprint, UUnet, AT&T, Global Crossing, XO and Level3. (more).

    Intrusion
At your request we will connect your server through our firewall and intrusion detection system. You may submit ipfw rules pertaining to your IP and they will be added to the firewall. In essence, it is like administering your own firewall.

    Data Protection
The first line of data protection is fully redundant data storage. All of our servers offer RAID hardware controllers and RAID1 mirrored hard drives standard or as an option. A single HDD failure will not take down your server or result in loss of data. A mirrored RAID1 disk array can decrease the probability of downtime or data loss due to a disk failure by a factor of 10.

    Data Recovery
Even RAID arrays can fail or more commonly can be corrupted by an attack or other problem e.g., “pilot error”. All of our dedicated server plans include back-up space on our local backup server. For further protection you can upgrade to an off-site back-up. (more).

    Power Source
Reliable hardware and data back up aren’t worth much if there is no power. Our racks contain an ATS (automatic transfer switch) that is powered from two uninterruptible UPS power sources. If one power source fails the ATS switches to the other with no downtime for your sever. (more).

    Environment
Hardware reliability is very much related to operating temperature. Our datacenter is cooled by dual APC AFX series HVAC systems that provide high volume Air Conditioning and backup systems required to cool server cabinets and network equipment. (more)

    Support
We are available 24/7 with technical support that includes hard reboots and setting up a serial console log capture and/or a dedicated KVM over IP device. (more).

    Operating Systems

You can select FreeBSD, Ubuntu, Debian, SuSe, Gentoo or Fedora as your operating system. We will also install Redhat or Windows* at your request (note Redhat and Windows are at extra cost).

You can even install and configure your server remotely!

*Windows is a trademark of Microsoft Corporation.
    Operating Systems and Installs

Our standard OS offering is Ubuntu 6.0. We will install Ubuntu 6.06 on any of our dedicated servers and certify that the server and installed OS are compatible and fully operational.

We also can provide dedicated servers with a variety of other operating systems including FreeBSD, Redhat, Debian, SuSe, Gentoo and Fedora.

These optional OSs can be installed in two different ways:

    JohnCompanies Install
We will install the OS version of your choice and determine that the OS and hardware are operational when we turn it over to you. If you run into problems we will do a re-install of the OS the first time at no charge. Subsequent re-installs will be billed on an hourly basis (re-loads usually take an hour or so and run about $100)

    Self Install
You install the OS the way you want it using a remote access KVM and our local library. In many situations, you can also install from a CD or DVD at your home computer (somewhat slow but doable). We will assist if you run into problems and need to re-install the OS.

Typically with any install, we will need you to provide information as to host name, swap space, disk partitions, time zone, etc.

    Ongoing Maintenance

We retain full responsibility for all hardware and network issues and will make repairs in an expeditious manner as possible. Some repairs, e.g., failed drives in RAID1 machines, will be replaced in the evening and coordinated with you to minimize the impact on your operations.

Once we hand over the dedicated server to you, be responsible for all OS and software issues but we will provide assistance and support upon request. As part of our support will connect a remote KVM to your server and allow you to log-in and you will change the password(s) and
